A system for Integrated Design of Tanker Structures, called INDETS, is presented. The system consists of a set of program modules for designing separate parts of the tank region such as longitudinal elements, transverse bulkheads and transverse frames. The programs communicate through a common data base and may be operated both interactively from remote terminals and by data cards. Primary dimensions and topology of girder systems must be specified by the designer while dimensions (and to some extent the geometry) of structural elements may be generated by the programs. Both a general optimization method, SUMT, and a simplified design procedure, the Stress Ratio Thehnique, may be applied. Two- and three-dimensional frame analyses are applied for the structural analysis of girder systems, while plates and stiffeners are dsigned according to classification rules. As a demonstration example the tank region of a 500,000 t.dw. ULCC is designed and some design parameters are varied systematically.
