STEPS TOWARDS ENHANCING THE PROSPECTS OF SUCCESS FOR EMERGENCY ANCHORING OF LARGE TANKERS

Germanischer Lloyd recently completed a research project designed, among other things, to produce computer forecasts of the movements of large tankers anchored as a result of emergencies. This project, partially supported by the Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) of the Federal Republic of Germany, included development of a mathematical maneuvering model specifically based on a ship at anchor. It comprised ship motions in the horizontal plane and hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship's hull, propeller, and rudder, as well as sudden forces caused by the anchor chain and forces caused by wind and waves. Computer code MASIMU was prepared, making it possible to simulate horizontal motions of a typical anchored tanker and to predict anchor chain forces resulting from current, wind, and waves. Results were used to arrive at practical measures that can be applied to enhance the prospects of success for emergency anchoring of large tankers.
