The development of riverside berths at Fleetwood, on the River Wyre in the UK, would involve deepening the port entrance channel. A historical analysis of siltation suggested that maintenance dredging would be high. A hydraulic model study was therefore undertaken to evaluate the design, construction, navigation and dredging factors associated with each of nine alternative schemes. To check the accuracy of the model, an area in the estuary was dredged and the siltation rate was shown to agree with that forecast by the model. The study identified a particular terminal design that would reduce by 75% the dredging that would have been associated with the design proposed initially.
