PORTABLE GAS FREEING AND TANK WASHING EQUIPMENT FOR CHEMICAL CARRIERS: DESIGN CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS
Results of tests that were conducted to evaluate the gas freeing performance of axial flow fans on a 30,000 dwt uncoated clean products tanker are presented. The vessel was selected as representing a worst case scenario, being fourteen years old and built with tank bottom stiffening that was extremely deep and that impeded air flow. The tests were conducted under actual working conditions and showed that portable axial flow fans and standpipes could be used in existing chemical carriers to satisfy the intent of SOLAS Regulation 59, on gas freeing.
