A summary is presented of what transpired at the 57th session of the International Maritime Organization's Maritime Safety Committee, held in London on April 3-12, 1989. Many matters relating to the carriage of dangerous substances were considered, arising from the reports of the Sub-committees on Bulk Chemicals, Carriage of Dangerous Goods, and Containers and Cargoes. The decisions that were taken are described. Among them is the decision that new editions of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code should be spaced at least 10 years apart.
