AN EXPERIMENTAL LNG CARRIER USING THE SPB TANK DESIGN

The SPB self-supporting prismatic LNG tank design developed by IHI, Japan, is approved by all major classification societies and the U.S. Coast Guard, and has proven itself to be highly reliable. This paper discusses the MV KAYOH MARU, a gas tanker built at IHI's Kure Shipyard and utilizing SPB LNG technology. Among the ship's purposes was that of demonstrating the building and construction technology for the tanks and their operating characteristics. Fifteen plan drawings, charts and photographs are appended to the text. The characteristics and advantages of the SPB/LNG carrier design are summarized.
