Details are provided on several major accidents involving hazardous materials. The two marine accidents discussed are the sinking of the PERINTIS in the English Channel on 13 March 1989 and the EXXON VALDEZ oil spill in Prince William Sound on 24 March 1989. In the case of the PERINTIS the special problem--referred to in the title- -was the loss of a deck-stowed container-load of the toxic pesticide lindane, a loss that again highlights the question of on-deck versus underdeck stowage of dangerous goods. The section on the EXXON VALDEZ grounding includes discussion of the liability ramifications for Exxon.
