ARMED MERCHANT SHIPS--A HISTORICAL REVIEW
The use of converted merchant ships for naval purposes has been essential in every war in recorded history. This paper reviews the way in which the Royal Navy has used, or planned to use, merchant ships since the days of the early steamship. The author points out that the problems with converted merchant ships have always been in the areas of subdivision, stability, endurance and local strength.
