SHIPMANAGEMENT FROM CYPRUS

The flag of Cyprus now ranks seventh worldwide in registered tonnage. It has been further boosted by bareboat charter legislation that has attracted considerable additional tonnage since 1987. The author discusses this prominence of Cyprus as a center of shipping and what he sees as the advantages that the flag offers. He then briefly describes the operation of his company, Columbia Shipmanagement Limited, one of the many ship management companies based on Cyprus and one servicing more than one hundred ships. As a practical example of the cost differentials between a traditional flag and open registry, he compares the running costs under the German and Cypriot flags for a fairly new 1,050 TEU, 13,400 dwt containership that has a 2-stroke engine of 6,800kW and a speed of 18 knots.
