ADVANTAGES OF MINI-BORE 2-STROKE PROPULSION ENGINES

The S26MC two-stroke engine design of MAN B&W A/S is intended to enable operators of medium-sized and smaller vessels to realize the technical and commercial benefits of the low-speed crosshead engine. To quantify the advantages, the 6S26MC is compared with two four- stroke diesel propulsion systems: the 6R32 manufactured by Wartsila and the 8M453C produced by MaK. Each four-stroke system comprises an engine, reduction gear and controllable pitch propeller, while the two-stroke 626MC has a direct-coupled propeller. The comparisons cover first purchase costs and subsequent operating costs relating to the propulsion system. For the three engines, detailed tables list parts life and prices, parts cost per year, and overhaul time costs.
