INEXPENSIVE BULK NITROGEN PRODUCTION
Nitrogen is used aboard chemical tankers to purge and blanket cargoes, preventing deterioration from oxygen and moisture and decreasing the risk of explosion, and for other purposes. Because it is inconvenient to have the needed nitrogen supplied, as it has been, in bottles from ashore, there has been a growing demand for shipboard nitrogen generating systems. One such system that is now being marketed is described. It is called the PRISM Alpha nitrogen system and was developed by Permea-Maritime Protection. Its technology and economics are both discussed.
