DIGITAL DRIVES IN CRANE CONTROL
Digital drives are now accepted as viable replacements for the analog drives in cranes. The author discusses the advantages of digital drives and notes that simplicity is their hallmark. Reliability and consistency are also characteristic of them, with mean time between failures typically in the order of 20,000 hours. A digital system with a keypad device as the primary interface is described in some detail. A crane-based mainframe computer rounds out the communications network and acts as a management information system.
