HIGHLY UPGRADED RO-RO CONVERSION
The conversion of two ro/ro ships, formerly called the MERCANDIAN PRESIDENT and MERCANDIAN GOVERNER, is described. The ships, renamed the LODBROG and the KRAKA, were converted by Danyard A/S, the Danish shipbuilder and repair enterprise, to meet the specialized requirements of the Danish State Railways (DSR), which has the vessels on a nine-year bareboat charter. They are intended for passenger ro/ro service across the Great Belt. The major changes to the formerly stern- and quarter-ramped cargo ferries were the provision of angled bow access to both vehicle decks, with closing arrangements; elimination of the quarter ramp and the addition of shore-ramp weatherdeck access over the quarter; and removal of the platform deck and of the internal cargo lifts.
