This paper describes the development, in China, of the 6E34/82SDZC type diesel engine. The engine is based upon the country's harbor conditions, shipping department requirements, and diesel industry productivity. Among the merits claimed for this low speed, two- stroke, constant supercharging, direct reversible, crosshead engine are: good economy, high reliability, simplicity in maneuvering, ease of maintenance, low vibration, low noise and a wide output range. These make the engine well suited to be the main propulsion unit for small- and middle-sized coastal vessels of shallow draft, particularly for economical vessels.
