THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE SHIPS OF THE FUTURE

The organization of West Germany's Schiff der Zukunft (Ship of the Future) Project, known as SdZ for short, is briefly outlined. The project was started in 1980 and the aims of the preliminary investigations are defined as having been the reduction of fuel costs and the reduction of personnel costs. By the end of 1983, most individual developments were completed and work entered the implementation phase. Various features and characteristics of the SdZ prototype ships that resulted are highlighted, some relating to fuel conservation and some to personnel reduction. Twenty-four pages of charts, drawings and photos accompany the text.
