DESIGN OF INTEGRATED NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

An integrated navigation system (INS) is a computer aided navigation system that combines several independent navigators, each with its own features and merits. The INS allows the navigators to compensate for each other's shortcomings and processes all navigational data, thereby improving the accuracy of the ship's position obtained. This paper is based upon the experience of producing a shipboard INS. The design principles for an INS are described in relation to the function configuration, hardware and software of such a system.
