PREDICTION OF FORCE AND MOTION RESPONSE IN DESIGN OF CRANE VESSELS

The motion of a crane vessel during heavy lift operation is significantly affected by the coupling between the motions of the vessel and the load being lifted. It is therefore important that in designing such a vessel, an appropriate method that takes this effect into consideration be used to predict motion responses and sling tension force. This paper modifies an existing theoretical method to include the effect of the coupled motion in eight degrees of freedom and to also take account of the viscous effect. Both ship-shaped and semisubmersible crane vessels are analyzed.
