SMOOTH SAILING FOR ELECTRONIC CHARTS

This article discusses the accomplishments of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee's Subcommittee on the Safety of Marine Navigation at its landmark meeting in January 1989 at which permanent worldwide standards for electronic charts were set. The standards are based on the report of the ECDIS Harmonization Group, composed of representatives of IMO and IHO (International Hydrographic Organization), and on draft standards compiled by the U.S. Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services. Ultimate approval of the performance standards by international bodies is scheduled for 1993. In the interim, electronic equipment manufacturers have a provisional standard to guide their research and development efforts.
