SHIP INTERACTION--A CASE STUDY

Macknight Consulting Engineers were commissioned to undertake a study of problems that might arise at the Steelworks Channel berths in the port of Newcastle (UK) from the passage of larger ships that might use the facility in the future. As the problem appeared to be one of ship interaction, the investigation focused on an economical means of calculating the order of magnitude of the interaction forces and the resulting ship motions. In addition, a computer model of moored ship behavior was developed in order to assess mooring line tension. Recommendations for ameliorating the effects of ship interaction forces are presented.
