THE USE OF SIMULATORS IN JUDGING MANOEUVRING CHARACTERISTICS OF BULKCARRIER

This paper deals with a series of simulator studies carried out at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) to determine the maneuvering characteristics of a bulk carrier, the IRON PACIFIC, before the vessel was actually built. The simulator tests showed that the IRON PACIFIC could be handled safely in the two Australian ports at which she would be scheduled to call regularly. The vessel's performance on her subsequent maiden voyage fully confirmed the simulator findings. The authors cite this case history as an example of the effectiveness of using simulation as a method of evaluating the maneuvering and handling characteristics of bulk carriers.
