CLEER: AN AI SYSTEM DEVELOPED TO ASSIST EQUIPMENT ARRANGEMENTS ON WARSHIPS

This paper describes a modular AI (artificial intelligence) system being built to help improve electromagnetic compatibility among shipboard topside equipment and its associated systems. CLEER, as it is called, is intended to serve as an easy-to-use integrator of existing expert knowledge and pre-existing databases, and large scale analytical models. These interfaces, the need for software portability and certain AI-related design requirements made traditional expert system shells inappropriate, although relatively off-the-shelf AI technology could be incorporated. The critical design decisions affecting CLEER's development are summarized along with lessons learned to date, all in terms of the "how," "why," and "when" of specific features that are being developed.
