HYDRODYNAMIC INTERACTION OF SHIPS IN SHALLOW CHANNELS, INCLUDING EFFECTS OF ASYMMETRY

The authors describe a numerical method for determining hydrodynamic interaction forces on passing ships in a shallow channel, including the effects of asymmetry in the channel cross-section. The expressions derived are in a form that can be evaluated by numerical quadrature, rather than by more complex procedures. For the case of passing ships, the calculated results show very good qualitative agreement with model test data. The lateral forces show good quantitative agreement as well, while computed yaw moments generally exhibit somewhat larger peak values than the experimental results under the constrained conditions of parallel passing.
