TECHNOLOGICAL AND ECONOMICAL ANALYSIS ON CHANGJIANG RIVER DEVELOPING SHIP TYPES

The Changjiang (Yangtze) River flows from east to west across central China and is the most important inland waterway in the country. This paper deals with the types of ships being developed for use on the river. Numerical examples illustrate discussions of the optimization of coal carrier types and fleets; techno-economical feasibility studies of new passenger ship types; and the development of carriers and their fleets for a shipping service to handle phosphoric acid imports. Problems relating to combination- and through-river/sea shipping are also discussed. Systems analysis and linear programming methodologies are used for quantitative analyses, providing powerful indicators for properly selecting ship types to meet the requirements for improving waterborne transportation in China.
