AN ANALYTIC APPROACH TO VERY HIGH SPEED FLAT SHIP THEORY

This paper defines an asymptotic procedure for analytic solutions to the linearized low-aspect-ratio problem of flow past a flat ship (with monotonic planform) traveling at very high speeds. (The extension to planforms whose maximum beam is not at the trailing edge is still an unresolved problem.) Relatively simple lift and drag formulas can be worked out for classes of hull shapes in such a way as to give insight into their relative performance. While the formulas presented in this paper were worked out by hand, the solution technique lends itself readily to computer evaluation.
