One of the most important technological developments taking place in the container industry is the increasingly widespread use of microprocessor-based controllers for refrigerated container machinery units. It has, among other things, cleared the way for the use of data communication techniques to implement remote monitoring of refrigerated container performance. It is explained how the introduction of microcomputer technology into container refrigeration equipment has proven to be a major breakthrough. The standardization of data transmission systems is obviously of critical importance and the work of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in this regard is also discussed.
