A discussion of steel handling is presented, with particular reference to a book entitled "Steel: Carriage by Sea" that has been published by Lloyd's of London Press. The book is primarily aimed at shipmasters and the world of marine insurance, offering sound advice on steel carriage methods, damage avoidance, and damage claims. It will no doubt be of interest, however, to a far wider audience for its coverage of such aspects as corrosion, ventilation, maintenance of steel hatches, mates' receipts and bills of lading. The main transport problems with steel cargoes and the main kinds of damage that must be guarded against--as identified in the book--are listed in the article.
