PISTONS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF MEDIUM-SPEED DIESEL ENGINES

With developments related to fuel quality having largely concluded for medium speed diesel engines, the improvement of reliability is once again a prominent concern. Technical progress in pistons is contributing to that improvement. The features and characteristics, of the new generation of pistons are discussed and are valid for the whole range of diameters above 200 mm. Piston tops are of forged steel and piston bodies are nodular cast iron; the studs are bolted from the inside; honeycomb cooling is used for the very stiff crown; there are no load-bearing surfaces between the crown and body at the perimeter; all piston rings are located in the crown; and the ring grooves are hardened or chrome plated.
