A STUDY ON THE STRENGTH OF COLLIDED SHIP: AN ESTIMATION OF DYNAMIC LOAD IN COLLISION

The strength of the ship structure in collision is important to the saving of lives and the minimization of damage. To properly design a ship structure possessing adequate strength, the time history of a dynamic collision force and, if necessary, the penetration of a striking ship, must be estimated. A method for accomplishing this is presented. It introduces a mass, spring and dashpots system for locally-struck substructures, considers the motions and hull vibrations of a laterally struck ship, and estimates penetration using static destructive test results.
