OPERATIONAL FEATURES IN SHIP DESIGN

This paper is organized into four major sections. Section 1 presents an overview of recent developments in the bulk commodity trade, focusing on the aspects of marketing, financing, and competition. Section 2 comprises an overview of containerships in the Netherlands' merchant fleet. Design features and principal characteristics of various types of container vessels are discussed. This section is followed by a presentation of a wide range of topics relating to ship operations and maintenance in general, e.g., maneuvering, mooring, corrosion prevention, energy conservation, and manning. The final section discusses the role of cellular containerships and offers guidelines for incorporating flexibility into the design of such vessels in case they need to be used for another kind of service.
