The International Ice Patrol (IIP) makes use of advanced technologies (e.g., airborne radar, infrared imagery, bathythermograph probes, satellite tracking) and oceanographic research to carry out its operations, such as iceberg reconnaissance, drift forecasting, and deterioration prediction. The IIP's research efforts to improve the quantity and quality of environmental data collected on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland are discussed briefly.
