In June 1987, the International Ice Patrol (IIP) conducted a week- long investigation of iceberg deterioration in the Labrador Current on the northeast Newfoundland Shelf. A cluster of six medium-sized icebergs was studied. Iceberg melt predictions derived from inputs collected during these on-site observations were compared with data available from the U.S. Navy's Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center and the Canadian Forces Meteorological and Oceanographic Center. The IIP's system input errors and the efforts that the patrol is pursuing to reduce these errors are also discussed.
