FEDERAL PROGRAMS AND PLASTICS IN THE OCEANS

In response to increasing concern over plastic pollution in the oceans, the White House Domestic Policy Council formed the Interagency Task Force on Persistent Marine Debris. The Task Force was composed of eleven federal agencies under the chairmanship of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Task Force assessed existing information and programs, and made a series of recommendations for addressing the problems of persistent marine debris. These recommendations include: the expansion of public awareness campaigns by federal agencies; continuation of research on the effects of plastic debris; and support of local activities to remove debris.
