FIBER OPTICS AND CRT BASED MARINE SYSTEM FOLLOW-UP

Fiber optics is being used successfully in land-based operations for reliable serial data transmission. It has been found, however, that fiber optic CRT-based shipboard diesel monitoring and control systems present problems in three basic areas: electromagnetic interference with the CRT operation; CRT nuisance resets; and CRT expandability. This paper analyzes the causes of these problems and makes recommendations for their resolution. Unique requirements and potential future enhancements of CRT-based shipboard system capabilities are also discussed.
