THE BTS METHOD AND ITS APPLICATION TO THE SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS GOVERNING THE FREE OSCILLATING BEHAVIOUR OF SOME NONLINEAR MARINE SYSTEMS

A method was developed by Beecham and Titchener (BT) for arriving at approximate analytical solutions of second-order autonomous nonlinear differential equations. The technique was extended by Simpson to cope with equations of order higher than two, after which the method was dubbed the Beecham-Titchener-Simpson (BTS) method. This paper discusses the BTS method and uses it in solving a number of equations occurring in problems from marine dynamics. These illustrative applications concern the free rolling of a ship, the stick-fixed pitch-dynamics of a submarine, the height of an oscillatory water column, and the nonlinear coupling of pitch and roll.
