AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF ALTERNATIVE STRUCTURAL MATERIALS FOR SMALL SWATH SHIPS

Lightweight structural materials are required to be used in the construction of small, high-speed SWATH ships in order to achieve viable payloads. The relative performance of six material configurations when applied to such vessels is examined, with emphasis upon aluminum alloy and glass reinforced plastic. The SWATH ships studied were of 250-ton displacement or less, and in service as fast ferries or as workboats. EVAL, a program written for the HP86B microcomputer and enabling the user to evaluate combinations of various materials for the hull, box and deckhouse, is briefly described.
