The flexible step-by-step procedure presented by the authors for the management of contaminated dredged material is intended to help in planning for those dredging undertakings that might prove problematical if not given special consideration. The procedure helps in deciding upon appropriate and compatible means for dredging and for transporting, treating and disposing of the dredged material. Means are combined into alternatives that are then evaluated as to their reliability, technical effectiveness, environmental impact, cost, regulatory requirements, public acceptance, safety and practicality.
