FIN AND RUDDER CONTROL SYSTEM FOR ROLL STABILIZATION

This article discusses the control of ship sway and yaw motions using a combined fin-rudder system. The system uses both a multivariable controller for sway, roll and yaw motions induced by rudder deflections and a stabilizing fin for ship course keeping and roll stabilization in quartering seas. A simulation study was carried out to compare fin, rudder and combined fin-rudder control systems. Self-running model tests in still water were also carried out to verify the correspondence between simulation results and experimental results.
