TWO YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH THE VTS-SIMULATOR IN TRAINING AND RESEARCH IN THE NETHERLANDS

In 1986, a vessel traffic services (VTS) simulator became operational at the Maritime Research Institute (MARIN), Netherlands. An introductory section of this paper describes the design, special features and operational requirements of the simulator. The remainder of the paper discusses the role of the simulator in the training of VTS operators and describes actual experiences with the simulator in training and research. The authors conclude that the simulator training provides the VTS operators with the needed skills, knowledge and behavior, and that the simulator has also proved its worth as a research instrument.
