BRITSHIPS--APPLICATION OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY TO SHIPBUILDING CAD/CAM; ADVANCES IN SHIP DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

BRITSHIPS is the generic title for an integrated CAD/CAM system produced by British Maritime Technology (BMT) for ship design and shipbuilding applications. The system was first released in 1972, and continues to be revised and enhanced to encapsulate the latest naval architectural design and analysis techniques, and the latest computing techniques. This paper is intended to describe the evolution of the BRITSHIPS system with emphasis on the impact that changes in analysis techniques, computing hardware, systems design technology and database handling techniques have had on the latest version of the system.
