The technique of magnetic finite element analysis (FEA) is explained. The technique can reveal magnetic saturation problems that would otherwise remain undetected within a design. In a structural finite element, the displacement vector is the main field variable and material properties are described by plotting stress against strain. In a magnetic finite element, the magnetic vector potential is the main variable and material properties are described by plotting flux density against field intensity. Applications of magnetic FEA include helping to pinpoint areas of a prototype where careful machining may be critical, and as a cross check for building a physical model.
