FRACTURE MECHANICS APPROACH TO VARIOUS ARCTIC STEEL STRUCTURES AND THEIR RELIABILITY ANALYSIS

This paper describes fracture toughness tests and structural model tests carried out to study the brittle fracture characteristics of steel plates for icebreaking vessels and for semisubmersible platforms operating in arctic or subarctic environments. Reliability assessments, including an analysis of fatigue crack propagation during service life and an evaluation of brittle fracture strength, were carried out under conditions approximating those encountered in arctic and subarctic climates.
