A NAVIGATOR MODEL (NAVSIM) TO SUPPORT PORT DESIGN
Many maritime designs and operational problems involve the human helmsman and navigator. A mathematical model of the human operator that has been developed by MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) is described. Called NAVSIM, it is based on the assumption that the navigator is a highly motivated and well trained subject, and it has proven capable of predicting complex navigation tasks with an acceptable degree of accuracy. An example of NAVSIM's use in a port design study is provided.
