This section of the proceedings of the 15th IAPH Conference provides a transcript of the first working session of the conference and three main presentations. The first, "Management and Finance in Ports--Today's Issues," deals with the need of ports to deliver services in an effective and cost-efficient manner in an environment that is constantly changing. The second, "Facilities, Operations, Labor and Logistics," looks at emerging technologies that affect container terminals and equipment design and visualizes what is in store for such terminals by the year 2001, the 21st century. The last, "An Information Network for Ports Worldwide," basically concerns progress in the area of electronic data interchange (EDI) among ports and specifically addresses developments in the area of the cargo manifest. The questions and comments of other session participants follow the transcripts of the three speeches.
