The use of shaft-driven generators has proven to be a way of successfully generating electricity aboard ship while reducing fuel, maintenance and repair costs. Siemens AG has now developed a new generation of such units for outputs of up to about 1,300 kW. These are known as FRECON (FREquency- CONtrolled) generators and produce electronically-regulated power at constant frequency and voltage despite variable drive speeds. In this article, Siemens engineers report on the functioning of this new generation of shaft-driven generators.
