The policy statements contained in the 1986 Federal Radionavigation Plan of the U.S. indicated that the Omega navigation system should remain operative until at least the year 2005. This called for the determination of what system elements are in need of capital investments to extend their service life. This article reports preliminary results from studies undertaken to arrive at that determination. Transmitting station equipments, including antennas, are being considered for redesign or replacement. Investigations also involve system monitors, system control software, and system propagation corrections. The studies will continue for several years and contribute to deliberations leading to biennial updates of the Federal Radionavigation Plan.
