FUTURE RESEARCH INTO THE SEAFARING INDUSTRY: AN ASEAN PERSPECTIVE
The Dalhousie University Ocean Studies Programme and the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore carried out a joint two- year study on southeast Asian seafarers. This paper reports on the major issues addressed by the study: national policies, seafarers' rights, and problems of seafarers' employment and training in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). The authors suggest that if the ASEAN countries are to meet new demands on seafarers' employment aboard modern ships, further work on innovative methods of maritime education will need to be coupled with research into certification requirements of the 1990s.
