COAST GUARD TELECOMMUNICATIONS -- ADAPTING TO THE CHANGING WORLD OF MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS

This paper begins with a summary overview of the assignments and missions of the United States Coast Guard, touching upon law enforcement, defense operations and marine safety. It then discusses the demands these operations place upon Coast Guard telecommunications in the areas of security, speed, capacity and interoperability, highlighting the consolidation of communication stations, the privatization of some services in the area of merchant vessel communications, broadcast automation, the upgrading of the National Distress System, packet-switched data networks, and satellite communications.
