THE SATCOMS SERVICES

The use of ship earth stations, or satcoms, has grown steadily over the years despite a prolonged depression in the shipping industry. Until 1988, the growth rate held steady at about 1,000 per year. In 1988, however, 1,000 were fitted by midyear alone, indicating a surge in interest. One spur is the increasing awareness by shipowners that an investment in satcoms offers more than a dramatic improvement in voice and telex communications. It offers a gateway to electronic services that can contribute to better efficency, lower operating costs and higher profits. The key has been the growing use of satcom links, in concert with onboard computers, to make ships an extension of data-processing management systems on shore. The effect is to encourage ships to take advantage of available value-added services, such as news and weather consultation schemes and interactive databases, some of which are aimed at the passenger ship market.
