A new technique for inspecting the flatness of rolled flat metal plates has been developed and used in production. The technique utilizes tiny eddy current coils to measure surface waviness ranging in depth from 0.001 in. to 0.015 in. at inspection rates of 60 to 90 in./min. Waviness across the width and in the direction of inspection are continuously monitored with a strip chart recorder. An accuracy greater than 0.001 in. is obtainable and varies with the coil lift-off from the surface being inspected. In production, the gage has exhibited good stability and reproducibility.
