IT AT SEA: A MARINER'S POINT OF VIEW

In the context of this presentation, IT means Information Technology used by mariners at sea in their computers. These include hand-held calculators, pocket-sized computers, personal portable computers, and the complex network systems built into some new tonnages. He deplores the lack of standards and the incompatibility of the many different systems being used by Nautical Institute members at sea. He then calls for the Institute to encourage discussion of computer operating systems and languages, a step that could lead to the issuance of guidelines with which the average mariner could arm himself in deciding what hardware would best suit his purpose. He concludes with some recommendations for mariners interested in obtaining their own personal portable computers and with fact sheets explaining telex, electronic mail and file transfer.
